KEITZER - as the world burns LP (7degrees) $6
Metallic, grindcore from Germany. A
sonic assault and battery from the first blast beat until the end.
Their drummer is pretty fantastic and plays as fast as a tommy gun
emptying cartridge, after cartridge of bullets. Straight-up, no frills,
no bullshit mayhem. No porno, gore or other dubious lyrics are growled
- despite no lyrics being included. If you like your early Earache,
current Crimes Against Humanity styled grind and done really well, then
look no further.

KODIAK / NADJA - split LP (denovali) $15
KODIAK: is not a band that you just play for enjoyment; It needs time and attention, but when it locks you in its slowly developing, pachyderm-paced punishing groove, Kodiak has a lot to offer, proving that monotony and monolithic heaviness are enough to make great songs, if you know how. Kodiak definitely know it.
NADJA: ''In doom and drone, genres where much of the stuff can sound remarkably similar, here is a band that stands apart as a beacon. Nadja have the deep drones and all the darkness of doom, but also have intricate melodies that permeate their long dirges...What's commendable about Nadja is the alchemical experimentation with the genres resulting in a unique concoction of doom metal, drone, shoegazer layering, and avant-rock explorations''

KONGH - shadows of the shapeless DLP (musicfearsastan) $13
As we’re just getting ourselves settled into Kongh’s second album, it feels like we’re going to be in for the kind of crushing, funereal doomfest that so many other Swedish bands excel at.
Which is cool; after all, when done well, that monstrously heavy, dirge-like music can sound extraordinary.
However, ten minutes into Shadows of the Shapeless the young trio pulls the rug out from under us,
as the morose lumbering is subtly replaced by a genuine swagger. In fact, it’s performed so convincingly,
they could easily pass for an American underground band (perhaps a reason why they’ve recently signed to Chicago’s great label Seventh Rule).
“Voice of the Below” is a gargantuan homage to Southern sludge, guitarist Davis Johansson carting out riff after riff that smack of Eyehategod’s Jimmy Bower,
while the brooding title track morphs into a crawling, malevolent beast of a tune, pinch squeals punctuating the churning riffs, the song climaxing in a burst of devastating palm-mutes.
Best of the lot, though, is the 15 minute “Essence Asunder”, which explores the kind of psychedelic territory that American doom kings YOB have always excelled at,
and pulls it off nearly as brilliantly as their Stateside counterparts. It’s easy to draw different comparisons to the various aspects of this album,
but coming from a place where doom metal tends to be a touch on the predictable side, this album is a very refreshing departure.

KOWLOON WALLED CITY - gambling on the richter scale LP (perpetual mm) $8
On Gambling on the Richter Scale, their first full-length, San Francisco's Kowloon Walled City add a touch of finesse to the grinding pummel introduced on last year’s Turk Street EP, which drew comparisons to Neurosis, The Melvins and other low-end explorers, from the ‘90s AmRep roster to the current crop of sludgecore contenders. These eight new crushing tracks unleash a barrage of noisy, down-tuned hardcore and sludge.

KRALLICE - dimensional bleedthrough DLP (gilead) $15
Krallice return with a full-length record that is leaps and bounds beyond their self-titled debut. Everything is MORE here, more droning black metal riffage, more intense metal parts and a greater sense of composition. On Dimesional Bleedthrough you can really feel that the Krallice has found a groove where they are comfortable and focused.
Some people say Krallice aren't trvly a black metal band, and that may very well be the case. Perhaps they've reached a point where they transcend the realms of what black metal has been, ascended to this new level where Dimensional Bleedthrough takes us. A level where it can be more progressive and more technical without limitations of some fuzzy indecipherable recording. Where other elements of metal can find themselves entwined in the cryptically crafted songs, creating something new and wonderful. If that's not your thing, that's fine. But that's where I'll gladly be.

LITANY FOR THE WHALE - dolores LP (perpetual motion machine) $8
On their debut EP, this four-piece exploit a gruffer take on heavy music, surrounding it with wailing feedback, darkened ambiance, and harmonious melodies. The end result is a chaotic and complex mix of hardcore, punk and metal elements, soaked with devastating levels of distortion, bass, and layered vocals.

LOSER LIFE - friends with a demon LP (takenbysurprise) $10
LOSER LIFE are back with their 2nd full length LP! After several months of touring, a handful of 7"s, a 12" and an album on MAGIC BULLET they have mastered their Chicago meets DC by way of Bakersfield sound. This time some darker elements and a great recording take things to the next level. An explosive mix that brings to mind bands like ARTICLES OF FAITH, NAKED RAYGUN or BORN AGAINST. LOSER LIFE comes from a place called Bakersfield, California, an area the band has numerously described as “the armpit of California”. This is what LOSER LIFE is influenced by and the band's sound makes their pleasant description seem all too realistic. LOSER LIFE is dirty, grimy, filthy and fucking pissed off at their little hole in the world and the world in general. They play music with a glass half-empty feeling with a glass overflowing the brim spirit.

Recorded in one take, "live-in-the-studio", in the middle of the Baltimore ghetto, at the legendary Barclay House. Mixed and mastered in 10 hours over the following two days.

MALIGNANCY - inhuman grotesqueries LP (haunted hotel) $8
from corazine.com -
Malignancy is a loud offering of controlled chaos. The untrained ear may hear metallic cacophony but the fine-tuned metal ear will recognize the manipulations of instruments carrying out this sick songwriting that crafted this batch of aural antagonism. 'Inhuman Grotesqueries' is violent social commentary married to a bit of the goregrind aesthetic. These are more than just lowbrow vomitings of gutmunching lyrics. Nihilism abounds and there's more than just a little misanthropy on tap. Naturally loud, fast instrumental contributions shred the eardrums while grinding vocals punch you in the stomach. Fans of classic grindcore can indulge their darkest fantasies.

MARTYRDOD - sekt LP (farewell) $12
Two years after "In Extremis" on Havoc Records Martyrdöd release their new Album named "Sekt". Stockholm's Martyrdöd hits you like a freight train at full speed. They've been described as a black metal-influenced version of WOLFBRIGADE and I can't think of a more accurate comparison. It's heavy and D-beat-driven yet retains a sense of dark/cold melodies. Total destruction! Political, social and personal thought are dealt with in the lyrics. 12 songs of brutal metallic crust. The LP comes in a very nice gatefold and printed sleeve.

MEMENTO MORI / MILKADD - split LP (zas autoproducioni) $6
"Super-sonic hardcore thrash from Torino, Italy. Some of MEMENTO MORI used to be in the great CONFUSIONE so you know you are in for high qualità ass kicking of classic Italy HC-meets-new school thrashcore. Inventive, intense, political hardcore that takes no quarter and delivers for the duration. Breath taking, really!! MILKADD follow in much the same manner: a modern approach with the intros and the arrangement but the beef is 100% italian hardcore classica!! Sick as fuck release!" - Short, Fast and Loud! zine
MORNE - untold wait LP (feral ward) $10
Morne is a band that I guess most of you already know or should know. They come from Boston and play awesome metallic crust, and I guess they're compared with Amebix for a reason, also cause it has some slow and heavy ambient parts I'd even go with Neurosis with this. That figures in a way, since two guys that played in Filth of Mankind and Disrupt/Grief also play in here (guitars). This is the latest album the band has released, and it's put out by Feral Ward Records in the states. Untold Wait contains the re-recorded tracks from the demo and one new track making this whole journey last for around 50 mins. The record also feature guest musicians Alicia Morgan of the band 13, as well as Kris Force, who is best known for her work with Amber Asylum, Swans and Neurosis.

MOUSE ON THE KEYS - sezession 10"+CD (denovali) $20
Mouse on the Keys is a jazzy instrumental trio from Tokyo, Japan. They partly used to play in "Nine Days Wonder" (a leading band of the Japanese post-rock scene) some years ago: Akira Kawasaki (drum, keyboards) and Atsushi Kiyota (piano, keyboards), along with Daisuke Niitome (piano, keyboards), who has played drums and composed music for jazz-funk/hiphop bands. The unique sound of the band’s drums, two pianos and two keyboards combines the urgent '90s American posthardcore with early/contemporary classical, jazz and various electronic music.

MOUSE ON THE KEYS - an anxious object LP (denovali) $20
"Do you wonder sometimes when was the last time you heard some really different sounding music from a band that doesn’t try to sound like everybody else? If yes, you probably know that there are very few such delectable artists out there, and often they are hard to discover because they don’t get the same amount of media coverage as those that are easier to
sell to the people. MOUSE ON THE KEYS are such a band!" a very unique soundscape and an absolutely fantastic liveset (supported by well selected video elements) you didn't see since years – overall: an intelligently paced new sound with a very very pleasant attention to detail. The drums are fantastic, the piano smooth and the other instruments masterfully used to make their records a joyful trip to bliss. This first full lenght 'AN ANXIOUS OBJECT' as a concept record represents the city tokyo + the band's imagination and feeling about it by sound, texture and artwork. Enjoy.

NADJA / OVO - the life and death of a wasp LP (vendetta) $10
It's not often that you come across an all-star avant-metal collaboration themed around the hot beverage-themed demise of a winged insect, but that's exactly what this strange LP is. Aidan Baker and Leah Buckareff of Nadja team up with Italian harbingers of sludge, Ovo, for a typically glacial exercise in creepy, lumbering doom-gaze. 'A Wasp Flying Around The Sugar Jar' is a slow, creaking starter, but once it's in full flow, the band lock into a punishing grind, complete with screechy female vocals from Ovo's Stefania Pedretti. 'Trapped In The Jar' feels more energised and more experimental, bringing a tone that almost hints at avant-jazz and industrial music, whilst spilling out some serious Linda Blair effects on those vocals. The final movement over on the B-side, 'Drowned In Coffee', is especially pleasing, featuring manic pounding on toms and chanted vocals that sounds like a Swans record lost somewhere in the Middle East.

POST REGIMENT - czarzly LP (nikt nic nie wie) $12
This is one of my all time favorite records. It has the elements that made the previous one great, but with even more focus on great melody and musicality. Driving punk with searing guitars and a lot of that upbeat polish folk music feel that runs through much of their punk rock. A great singer and mind blowing songwriting makes for a totally unique take on this sound. The reissue is essential for anyone who likes melodic punk..

PROTESTERA / GOTCHA - split 10" (acclaim) $8
from accl.. "Swedish and Japanese "super" anarcho punk bands. We are really really excited this project, because both bands are one of the best anarcho punk bands in the world, and it's very important that the anarchist resistance strategy of Protestera be translated into Japanese. By the way, for the world's punx who doesn't know Japanese GOTCHA : They are male/female vocaled experimental anarcho-punk band that used the drum-machine now from Fukuoka, and the activity is long in Japan. And they released three tapes (demo, split tape w/Control and "How long will we continute..." tape (same as split tape w/Control) and are participating in two compilations ("Crust Night 2001" comp CD that "Tribal War Asia Records" released, and "Nine-states Chain Strength" comp CD-R that "Koroshino Records" released) by present. Their music keep always changing, and now they play sounds like the "Massive Attack meets Crass meets Conflict"! The lyrics also are very inspirational. "

RAKKAUS - jokainen paiva on tristelua LP (tuska&ahdistus/clovek-levyt/ratas) $10
Barrage of Salt did me a favor a few years ago by releasing this bands two previous Ep's. i got a hold of them somehow and liked them right away. totally catchy in a 'i cant put my finger on it' kind of way. ripping finnish punk, female (and male) vocal-ed and pissed. personal and well as political lyrics, more in touch with actual reality and life than "bombs of crust" nonsense. excellent. like Amebix on speed, raw yet strongly recorded. anthemic in parts even.....i absolutely have a soft spot for these folks!

REVOK - bad books and empty pasts LP (denovali) $16
Holy shit, I absolutely understand why people were telling me to check this band out, because this is an absolutely excellent album that really has a lot to offer. The base of their approach should definitely appeal to fans of this niche of the French post hardcore scene, what with its pulsing rhythms and dark, grating textures and scathing vocals. However, the direction in which they're heading is also incredibly distinct, and really sets them apart from other (often more standard) acts that explore these realms of 'extreme music'.

ROT IN HELL - hallways of the always LP (a389) $8
Included are all of the songs from the band's vinyl releases to date – the 2007 demo 7" (a.k.a. "Sins of Malice"), the "Millennial Psychosis" split 7" with Brain Dead, the split 7" with Hordes, and "The Works of Fate" split 7" with The Process – as well as a handful of other tracks that, for the most part, have yet to be released elsewhere (as far as I know). As I've discussed here a few times in the past (and am sure to do again in the future), expect nothing but top-notch metallic hardcore heavily influenced by the classic "holy terror" sound pioneered by Integrity, as well as flourishes reminiscent of Ringworm and Gehenna, alongside their own wickedly raw and explosive aesthetic. You'll find short, explosive bursts of power chords with loads of tactfully chaotic leads straight out of the early Integrity handbook, maniacally screamed/shouted vocals as well as a few cryptic whispers, slower midpaced rhythms that flirt with darker atmospheres, and searing little bits of feedback galore. And then there's 8+ minute closer "Now, Today, Tomorrow, and Always", which heads in an entirely different direction with beautiful acoustic guitars and faint samples amidst distant, obscured singing and quivering experimental noise textures. In addition, this 12-track release contains four of the absolute best fucking cover songs ever recorded: "Final Word" (Meanstreak), "Kingdom of Heaven" (Integrity), "Skincrawl" (Ironside), and "Chunks" (Last Rights).

SACRED SHOCK - you're not with us LP (residue) $8
Following both of their amazing EPs, Sacred Shock (Austin, TX) picks up the intensity and attacks the senses on this 11 song modern classic. Featuring members and ex-members of such amazing bands such as HATRED SURGE, ARMY OF JESUS, IRON AGE, and the YOUNG- Sacred Shock sticks strong melody and insane hooks and then pile it over with Alex’s stream-roller vocal style. Striking lyrics dealing with alienation and blistering anger… it is impossible not to have songs stuck in you head for days! Nothing short of crushing, masterful, and brutal all wrapped up in one moment. Do not miss out on this record!

SCUM NOISE - s/t LP (terrotten/broderkont/starving times) $6
A brand new full length from Brazillian D-beaters SCUM NOISE brings us nine new tracks of Swedish inspired D-beat madness plus a cover of DRILLER KILLER's drunken anthem Alcoholocaust. SCUM NOISE have been playing for some years now and their previous releases have earned them comparisons to DOOM and ANTI-CIMEX. These comparisons still hold true on this record as they continue the general style of angry, (mostly) political songs with all but one sung in English. The recording production on the LP is appropriately heavy and has a really full sound comparable to Scandinavian Jawbreaker. Best enjoyed cranked up to volume 11!

SEPTEMBER MALEVOLENCE - tomorrow we'll wonder where... LP (denovali) $10
They've been called the Swedish Explosions in the Sky, and you can only take such a comparison as flattery. September Malevolence leads a booming Swedish instrumental scene with moody, slightly off-beat post-rock that has a perfect insight into the quiet/loud approach that has dominated the genre over the past few years. Top-notch songwriting sets Tomorrow We'll Wonder... apart from the pack, and it's a skill like that which is an indicator that this band is not a flash in the pan. Tomorrow We'll Wonder... gets darker than one would expect, but this is complemented well by a gloomy atmosphere that looms over the album. While the dark clouds are briefly cast away throughout the course of the album, it's ultimately a losing battle as the intent of the band becomes clear by the album's conclusion. And with that September Malevolence leaves us craving more."

A SOCIAL CIRCKLE LP! Finally, more than just a few songs for our enjoyment. If you've heard their previous 7"es and comp tracks, then you know they are an all around solid hardcore punk band. I think it's safe to say they've outdone themselves here. You'll have to be the judge of that. As for the tunes present here, they've combined melody with speed on all the right levels. SYSTEMATIC DEATH - systema 6 LP (feral ward) $8
So many old bands have hit the reunion circuit of the past few years that it's hardly surprising when the occasional reunion tour actually fulfills its promise of reliving the glory days. However, it's still incredibly rare when a reformed group releases material that rivals--even bests--their classic material. Such is the case with this brand new LP from Japan's Systematic Death, which for me ranks right next to their classic Final Insider LP as the band's very best recorded material. It's a little early to say, but I may even like this stuff better... Systema have taken their classic paint-peeling sound and added some quirky, Gauze-like tempo changes that make this record seem both more chaotic and more focused than any of their work from the 80s. Needless to say, I'm completely in love with this LP and if you're as into Japanese hardcore as I am you're probably going to want a copy for yourself.

THOU - baton rouge, you much to answer for LP (robotic empire) $12
An exceedingly opulent new sludge tome from this Louisiana metal band on Robotic Empire, pressed up onto translucent blood-red vinyl and housed in a bold and beautiful gatefold jacket. This is heavy, excruciatingly slow and sonically pulverised material, but as demonstrated by the material over on the A-side, in terms of the doom genre this is an in-depth and highly musical affair that offers plenty of chugging rifferama to soak up. On the B-side there's an opening cut that's essentially a droning bass-fuzz monolith, but then you find an out-of-nowhere Nirvana cover ('Sifting'), which is delivered in a fittingly hellish tone. "Easily one of the most exciting modern sludge/doom bands going, Thou calls Louisiana home and have channeled lifetimes of depression & decay as the inspiration for Baton Rouge, You Have Much To Answer For. Scathing commentary laid down by hateful blackened vocals is merged with some of the most crushing riffs conceived in ages.

UTOPIA - niee LP (trujaca fala) $12
first "real" UTOPIA album - few years after their debut CD, which was actually a rehearsal space demo recording(and a great one at that!), but already gave this band a lot of attention, supported by their energetic and passionate live shows around Poland and some other european countries. 11 raging punk songs with strong female vocal. Fast and energetic, with great tempo changes, melodic parts, solid drumming and powerful guitars. Their music is somewhere in between Polish melodic hardcore punk (Post Regiment again), La Fraction and american 80's hardcorepunk. Plus great production - mix and mastering by maestro Smoku (Post Regiment, PESD).

VICTIMS - killer LP (havoc) $9
Victims have been the front of Swedish hardcore for many years mixing traditional Swedish D Beat and Crust sounds with more straight forward American hardcore influences. This LP has all the tight and crushing arrangements you'd expect from this crew. A few more songs leaning towards the "d beat rocknroll" end of hardcore, but over all very much in the same punishing tradition of the last two LPs.

VITAMIN X - full scale assault LP (tank crimes) $8
After touring throughout the world, Dutch hardcore punk giants Vitamin X return with their first recorded output in 3 years. Finally capturing the manic aggression of their notorious live shows while truely showcasing their songwriting skills and musicianship. VX take their furious hardcore sound even further into the realms of 70's rock riffage and wild guitar solos, never letting up on the high energy thrash punk. Recorded and Engineered at Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago by Steve Albini (Nirvana, Neurosis) it has an enormous sound. The album features lead vocals by Negative Approach's John Brannon on 2 songs and amazing artwork by John Baizley (Baroness, Pig Destroyer). This is a serious hardcore masterpiece. LP packaged in a gatefold jacket including printed card stock dust sleeve insert and gatefold poster.

WHAT IF GODS LIE - third world (despotic) $5
Ex HOG members from Mexico City playing angry political crustpunk (lyrics in both Spanish and English). Musically they are heavy, down-tuned crust with growled vocals - pretty closely capturing the classic sounds of late 80's crust/punk crossover bands like DOOM and ENT. There is also a hint of the more modern, tuneful influences of TRAGEDY and friends which, coupled with a excellent recording quality, really makes for an exciting and not enitrely predicatble release. This is their first full length, hot on the heels of their great split CD with ALL SYSTEMS FAIL.

WORMSBLOOD - masters of creation LP (barbarian) $8
Known for his work in the popular proto doom act Jex Thoth and from his own power electronics outfit Burial Hex, Clay Ruby ventures in a different direction this time. An album of outsider metal, it's sparse and bleak, but rumblings, clanging and tortured cries erupt violently throughout. A very unhinged and dangerous album. Comparisons could be drawn to Armanenschaft, Blood of the Black Owl & the True Werwolf, both musically, as well as in the sense those bands also use black metal as a foundation to explore darker, more experimental avenues.

Hard at work since the self-titled debut last winter, Wyqm has created a follow-up LP illustrating a bleak and furious landscape of these wooded surroundings. “Portrait of Spectre” paints a picture through 8 songs of raw, chaotic black metal, taking you on a journey from blasting destructive storms to cold, dark atmospheres.

YEAR OF NO LIGHT - ausserwelt DLP (musicfearsatan) $16
Bordeaux, France's Year Of No Light play crushingly dark and depressing atmospheric shoegaze sludge. A lot to say, huh? Well so is there about this release. Although this DLP is only 4 songs long it still manages to take the listener to a whole new plane of existence. A world devoid of hope and light. Where sorrow reigns in the absence of light.
This DLP marks the first release with their new line-up consisting of three guitarists, two drummers and a bassist which only seems to add to the immensity of their sound, not hinder it. And to their credit, Year Of No Light have created one of the best ambient metal records I've had the pleasure of hearing.

YEAR OF NO LIGHT / MACHU PICCU MOTHER FUTURE - split LP (musicfearsatan) $10
YEAR OF NO LIGHT offers us two new tracks with studio collaborations with FEARS FALLS BURNING and NADJA
While on an east coast tour in November of 2007, CONIFER (Important Records) and LESBIAN (Holy Mountain) drove to Richmond, Virginia arriving at 5a.m. and ended up crashing at the Sound Of Music recording studio for two nights. There to play a show with SOUVENIR'S YOUNG AMERICA (Crucial Blast) at the Nara Sushi, all three bands (11 members total in one live room) entered the studio on very little sleep and recorded roughly two hours of improvised music... very loosely structured and minds somewhat altered... These sessions birthed what will be known as "Space Mountain Forever."
