MORNE - untold wait LP (feral ward) $10

Morne is a band that I guess most of you already know or should know. They come from Boston and play awesome metallic crust, and I guess they're compared with Amebix for a reason, also cause it has some slow and heavy ambient parts I'd even go with Neurosis with this. That figures in a way, since two guys that played in Filth of Mankind and Disrupt/Grief also play in here (guitars). This is the latest album the band has released, and it's put out by Feral Ward Records in the states. Untold Wait contains the re-recorded tracks from the demo and one new track making this whole journey last for around 50 mins. The record also feature guest musicians Alicia Morgan of the band 13, as well as Kris Force, who is best known for her work with Amber Asylum, Swans and Neurosis.

MOUSE ON THE KEYS - sezession 10"+CD (denovali) $20

Mouse on the Keys is a jazzy instrumental trio from Tokyo, Japan. They partly used to play in "Nine Days Wonder" (a leading band of the Japanese post-rock scene) some years ago: Akira Kawasaki (drum, keyboards) and Atsushi  Kiyota (piano, keyboards), along with Daisuke Niitome (piano, keyboards), who has played drums and composed music for jazz-funk/hiphop bands. The unique sound of the band’s drums, two pianos and two keyboards combines the urgent '90s American posthardcore with early/contemporary classical,  jazz and various electronic music.

NADJA / OVO - the life and death of a wasp LP (vendetta) $10 

It's not often that you come across an all-star avant-metal collaboration themed around the hot beverage-themed demise of a winged insect, but that's exactly what this strange LP is. Aidan Baker and Leah Buckareff of Nadja team up with Italian harbingers of sludge, Ovo, for a typically glacial exercise in creepy, lumbering doom-gaze. 'A Wasp Flying Around The Sugar Jar' is a slow, creaking starter, but once it's in full flow, the band lock into a punishing grind, complete with screechy female vocals from Ovo's Stefania Pedretti. 'Trapped In The Jar' feels more energised and more experimental, bringing a tone that almost hints at avant-jazz and industrial music, whilst spilling out some serious Linda Blair effects on those vocals. The final movement over on the B-side, 'Drowned In Coffee', is especially pleasing, featuring manic pounding on toms and chanted vocals that sounds like a Swans record lost somewhere in the Middle East.

This is one of my all time favorite records. It has the elements that made the previous one great, but with even more focus on great melody and musicality. Driving punk with searing guitars and a lot of that upbeat polish folk music feel that runs through much of their punk rock. A great singer and mind blowing songwriting makes for a totally unique take on this sound. The reissue is essential for anyone who likes melodic punk..

By the way, for the world's punx who doesn't know Japanese GOTCHA : They are male/female vocaled experimental anarcho-punk band that used the drum-machine now from Fukuoka, and the activity is long in Japan. And they released three tapes (demo, split tape w/Control and "How long will we continute..." tape (same as split tape w/Control) and are participating in two compilations ("Crust Night 2001" comp CD that "Tribal War Asia Records" released, and "Nine-states Chain Strength" comp CD-R that "Koroshino Records" released) by present. Their music keep always changing, and now they play sounds like the "Massive Attack meets Crass meets Conflict"! The lyrics also are very inspirational. "

Barrage of Salt did me a favor a few years ago by releasing this bands two previous Ep's. i got a hold of them somehow and liked them right away. totally catchy in a 'i cant put my finger on it' kind of way. ripping finnish punk, female (and male) vocal-ed and pissed. personal and well as political lyrics, more in touch with actual reality and life than "bombs of crust" nonsense. excellent. like Amebix on speed, raw yet strongly recorded. anthemic in parts even.....i absolutely have a soft spot for these folks!

REVOK - bad books and empty pasts LP (denovali) $16

Holy shit, I absolutely understand why people were telling me to check this band out, because this is an absolutely excellent album that really has a lot to offer. The base of their approach should definitely appeal to fans of this niche of the French post hardcore scene, what with its pulsing rhythms and dark, grating textures and scathing vocals. However, the direction in which they're heading is also incredibly distinct, and really sets them apart from other (often more standard) acts that explore these realms of 'extreme music'.

ROT IN HELL - hallways of the always LP (a389)  $8

Included are all of the songs from the band's vinyl releases to date – the 2007 demo 7" (a.k.a. "Sins of Malice"), the "Millennial Psychosis" split 7" with Brain Dead, the split 7" with Hordes, and "The Works of Fate" split 7" with The Process – as well as a handful of other tracks that, for the most part, have yet to be released elsewhere (as far as I know). As I've discussed here a few times in the past (and am sure to do again in the future), expect nothing but top-notch metallic hardcore heavily influenced by the classic "holy terror" sound pioneered by Integrity, as well as flourishes reminiscent of Ringworm and Gehenna, alongside their own wickedly raw and explosive aesthetic. You'll find short, explosive bursts of power chords with loads of tactfully chaotic leads straight out of the early Integrity handbook, maniacally screamed/shouted vocals as well as a few cryptic whispers, slower midpaced rhythms that flirt with darker atmospheres, and searing little bits of feedback galore. And then there's 8+ minute closer "Now, Today, Tomorrow, and Always", which heads in an entirely different direction with beautiful acoustic guitars and faint samples amidst distant, obscured singing and quivering experimental noise textures. In addition, this 12-track release contains four of the absolute best fucking cover songs ever recorded: "Final Word" (Meanstreak), "Kingdom of Heaven" (Integrity), "Skincrawl" (Ironside), and "Chunks" (Last Rights).

From the USA, in the state of Virginia and the city of Richmond, Shravan from Aghasts band Sedition Sub Rosa releases their first LP! Released on Skells Minneapolis label Distort Reality. The photograph on the insert has a band posing similar to Kuro and gives a good idea of what to expect the sound to be. The Sound resembles Kuro and 80's Finnish hardcore like Riistetytfused with very reverby vocals, the makings for a cool new band. Also many similarities to Invasion/Destino Final. SYSTEMATIC DEATH - systema 6 LP (feral ward) $8

So many old bands have hit the reunion circuit of the past few years that it's hardly surprising when the occasional reunion tour actually fulfills its promise of reliving the glory days. However, it's still incredibly rare when a reformed group releases material that rivals--even bests--their classic material. Such is the case with this brand new LP from Japan's Systematic Death, which for me ranks right next to their classic Final Insider LP as the band's very best recorded material. It's a little early to say, but I may even like this stuff better... Systema have taken their classic paint-peeling sound and added some quirky, Gauze-like tempo changes that make this record seem both more chaotic and more focused than any of their work from the 80s. Needless to say, I'm completely in love with this LP and if you're as into Japanese hardcore as I am you're probably going to want a copy for yourself.

THOU - baton rouge, you much to answer for LP (robotic empire) $12

An exceedingly opulent new sludge tome from this Louisiana metal band on Robotic Empire, pressed up onto translucent blood-red vinyl and housed in a bold and beautiful gatefold jacket. This is heavy, excruciatingly slow and sonically pulverised material, but as demonstrated by the material over on the A-side, in terms of the doom genre this is an in-depth and highly musical affair that offers plenty of chugging rifferama to soak up. On the B-side there's an opening cut that's essentially a droning bass-fuzz monolith, but then you find an out-of-nowhere Nirvana cover ('Sifting'), which is delivered in a fittingly hellish tone. "Easily one of the most exciting modern sludge/doom bands going, Thou calls Louisiana home and have channeled lifetimes of depression & decay as the inspiration for Baton Rouge, You Have Much To Answer For. Scathing commentary laid down by hateful blackened vocals is merged with some of the most crushing riffs conceived in ages.

UTOPIA - niee LP (trujaca fala) $12

first "real" UTOPIA album - few years after their debut CD, which was actually a rehearsal space demo recording(and a great one at that!), but already gave this band a lot of attention, supported by their energetic and passionate live shows around Poland and some other european countries. 11 raging punk songs with strong female vocal. Fast and energetic, with great tempo changes, melodic parts, solid drumming and powerful guitars. Their music is somewhere in between Polish melodic hardcore punk (Post Regiment again), La Fraction and american 80's hardcorepunk. Plus great production - mix and mastering by maestro Smoku (Post Regiment, PESD).

VICTIMS - killer LP (havoc) $9

Victims have been the front of Swedish hardcore for many years mixing traditional Swedish D Beat and Crust sounds with more straight forward American hardcore influences. This LP has all the tight and crushing arrangements you'd expect from this crew. A few more songs leaning towards the "d beat rocknroll" end of hardcore, but over all very much in the same punishing tradition of the last two LPs.

After touring throughout the world, Dutch hardcore punk giants Vitamin X return with their first recorded output in 3 years. Finally capturing the manic aggression of their notorious live shows while truely showcasing their songwriting skills and musicianship. VX take their furious hardcore sound even further into the realms of 70's rock riffage and wild guitar solos, never letting up on the high energy thrash punk. Recorded and Engineered at Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago by Steve Albini (Nirvana, Neurosis) it has an enormous sound. The album features lead vocals by Negative Approach's John Brannon on 2 songs and amazing artwork by John Baizley (Baroness, Pig Destroyer). This is a serious hardcore masterpiece. WHAT IF GODS LIE - third world (despotic)  $5

Ex HOG members from Mexico City playing angry political crustpunk (lyrics in both Spanish and English). Musically they are heavy, down-tuned crust with growled vocals - pretty closely capturing the classic sounds of late 80's crust/punk crossover bands like DOOM and ENT. There is also a hint of the more modern, tuneful influences of TRAGEDY and friends which, coupled with a excellent recording quality, really makes for an exciting and not enitrely predicatble release. This is their first full length, hot on the heels of their great split CD with ALL SYSTEMS FAIL.

WORMSBLOOD - masters of creation LP (barbarian) $8

Known for his work in the popular proto doom act Jex Thoth and from his own power electronics outfit Burial Hex, Clay Ruby ventures in a different direction this time. An album of outsider metal, it's sparse and bleak, but rumblings, clanging and tortured cries erupt violently throughout. A very unhinged and dangerous album. Comparisons could be drawn to Armanenschaft, Blood of the Black Owl & the True Werwolf, both musically, as well as in the sense those bands also use black metal as a foundation to explore darker, more experimental avenues.

YEAR OF NO LIGHT - ausserwelt DLP (musicfearsatan) $16

Bordeaux, France's Year Of No Light play crushingly dark and depressing atmospheric shoegaze sludge. A lot to say, huh? Well so is there about this release. Although this DLP is only 4 songs long  it still manages to take the listener to a whole new plane of existence. A world devoid of hope and light. Where sorrow reigns in the absence of light.

This DLP marks the first release with their new line-up consisting of three guitarists, two drummers and a bassist which only seems to add to the immensity of their sound, not hinder it. And to their credit, Year Of No Light have created one of the best ambient metal records I've had the pleasure of hearing.

While on an east coast tour in November of 2007, CONIFER (Important Records) and LESBIAN (Holy Mountain) drove to Richmond, Virginia arriving at 5a.m. and ended up crashing at the Sound Of Music recording studio for two nights. There to play a show with SOUVENIR'S YOUNG AMERICA (Crucial Blast) at the Nara Sushi, all three bands (11 members total in one live room) entered the studio on very little sleep and recorded roughly two hours of improvised music... very loosely structured and minds somewhat altered... These sessions birthed what will be known as "Space Mountain Forever."

barrikaden is a squatted building in oslo, norway and has been around for ten years now. its been one of the most important scenes in oslo, and norway as a whole since it started. from stian/nakkeskudd plater: "i know i have a lot of good memories about this place, playing, drinking, taking pictures,selling records and so on. so when i was asked to participate on this release, to mark this milestone, it was a no-brainer for me. the concept is simple: gather good bands and good friends that has played at barrikaden. one norwegian side and one international side." bands: hevn,black blood world, bøyen beng, victimised, 2:20, summon the crows, civil victim, avskum, skarpretter, juggling jugulars, sotatila, pest fest.  

a good mix of punk / hc bands and some of the best from the area.
